sup bitches

after what some would call a good first try and others would call "My brain hurts and my soul too...What is this? Seriously what the hell have you ingested before thinking 'Oh yeah i can upload this on Newgrounds it's good!' Christ I hope to never again stumble on this page, even loading it will be a utter waste of time, bandwidth and life." and still others would go on to say "This would have been cool in the 90's" which to me sounded like a complement at first but wasn't.
anyways, after a bunch of talentless assholes typed a bunch of mean words at me I continued work.
my next project is a little larger in scope and hopefully a little simpler in code. i'm attempting to make a Point and Click Adventure game. i'm gonna try and not rip anyone off
to ensure quality my good friend Carlos will be penning the scripts, i will have a few voice actors and possibly more artists than myself. i'm also looking to do some quick event jawns but try to not rip off anyone else

so i'll update this place with stuff about that i guess. also i will make something for robot day....

Last Day

so i know this is now technically Saturday and i should have posted already but i watched Dance of the Dead, House of the Dead, and Insanitorium. Only one of them was good, take a guess.

Anyway today was my last day interning at Newgrounds. very sad to leave. but hey, i can visit them any time. So i managed to wrap up most of the game. I think programming its 99& done, just some final adjustments but i don't think i'll add any mechanics. then i'll work on more buildings to destroy so that should be up some time next week.

i brought in muffins for the gang but Jose, Rob, Josh and Mike had taken the day off and Stamper left when i got in. Sucks for them, my mom's muffins rule. We went out to lunch at Kitchen Bar. I tried to explain my goofy Quaker school graduation to them. Its weird because I never think about it anymore but its so different than anywhere else. we got on the topic of Disney World which Jeff says sucks and told us about how as a kid he accidentally grabbed a cockroach there and it ruined him for life. He argues for universal as more fun. Bob figures both are fine. We talked a lot about amusement parks that allow you to frighten or attack children. Tom mentioned someplace where you can shoot balls at kids and Tim mentioned the scuba tanks in Disney where you can freak out the kids eating by them.

Tim and Tom went to get their pictures taken so Tyler, Luis and I had to cram in the backseat with Bob driving and Jeff comfortably in shotgun. Bob had told us this ridiculous story about this dude and then Luis told us a really funny story about the same dude which i'm afraid to type in case of the person it was about ever finds this. But it sent Bob into a hilarious fit about wondering if gout is like herpes and how so many people have herpes simplex one and fearing that one day he will have both. Jeff also told a funny story about the same dude playing Red Dead Redemption and leaving to buy a new mic. And then Jeff throwing dynamite at him when he got back. I wanna make that a cartoon cause its fucking hilarious.

anyway, my time at NG has been eye opening. its amazing how much about the site i was able to learn. so for everyone who thinks they are slackers and that NG has lost it, those dudes work hard. Theres no place else to go but up for them and theres a lot of good stuff coming down the line so hold on to your butts as Samuel L Jackson in Jurassic Park would say.

Shove that all up in your ass

so the game is practically done. just some tweaks and then i think next week i'll be adding more buildings if i can muscle through that

i might be doing something with other intern Tyler for Robot Day. trying to think of something different to do with robots that isn't fighting or dancing or being japanese. hope that actually happens but with the whole graduating thing i dunno if theres time.

So we went to Old Man Al's Burgers n Shit for lunch. My food came out after everyone finished eating which made Jeff happy cause hes usually the one to get his order screwed up. it was a good burger though. bacon with potato bread buns. anyway we got on the topic of the NG Voicemail and how funny that cartoon by Stamper is. For those of you who didn't realize, Tom doesn't listen to those. On occasion the staff listens for a good laugh. Then i was told a story about an email Stamper sent to their 401k manager unbeknownst to Stampy that he was an actual person they knew not some kind of spammer. It ended with the best insult of "PS: I hope you die in a car fire. With your family." just think about that.

oh yeah, we were talking about this because Tom heard about how many kids die cause their parents leave them in the car and forget.

speaking of forgetting i don't remember what else i was gonna write about. probably something about Bob's awesome BBQ party and Saturday's Stanley Cup game.

Chocolate Frosty Hump Day

BAH TWO DAYS LEFT WTF

so game: playable, theres ammo, sound effects, music, artwork about 93ish% done. just gotta work out some kinks in the obstacle hit senors. i'm also gonna mess around and try to give it a more mob feel by having people run out in front of the player. this will make it so the player has to re-learn how to jump over every obstacle. since each character has its own jump height and place each jump will be different. right now it seems to be less skill and more waiting till you get the best jumpers, and even the then the cop car is too long to jump for the 4 to 6 person. i picked Gekkotech as the song.

Tom asked me if newgrounds was old. i mean its way old in internet years. a lot of kids i know, know about it and have played games but honestly i don't know much about how other highschool kids play internet games. how do they find them? i mean plenty of kids are content to Google games and play whatever Viacom has listed at the top. newgrounds' frontpage just allows for good content to be found faster.
flash games seem to still only be time killers. i don't know a ton of people who grind through long flash games. even stuff like Edmund's stuff people have a tough time wanting to muscle through. i think that the viral aspect of NG has just kinda slowed. i dunno though.

in other news Mike has Super Mario Galaxy 2 and loves it. Bob is patiently waiting for Chik-fil-a's new spicy chicken sandwich as is Josh who has the ticket to get a free one. Tom and Jeff's game gets constantly more ridiculous (sandwich building mini-game). and I haven't seen Stamper recently....

Lonely Tuesday

So Tyler wasn't in and Tom left to talk to some big wigs downtown about some Cloud Game stuff. Its hard out there for an indie dev.
So I was left alone for most of the day hard at work on the awful looking run cycles. please do not look at them too hard cause they are weird and i got so bored doing them. but the art is mostly done and the coding just has some loose ends to tighten and tie.

i spent lunch with Bob and Tim who i also watched the FLYERS WIN THE CONFERENCE SHIP!!! WOOO FUCK YEAH RICHARDS AND CARTER AND LAPE! Anywho, Tim asked me about didgeridoo (correct spelling BTW) because apparently Dan Paladin's concept for "Game 3" was going to be Australian themed and be called Didgeridudes but Tim argued that that was the worst name ever and was impossible to spell if looking for it online. Bob argued Hominid was also strange. regardless BBT looks like a lot of fun and apparently we have the level editor, hush hush, whisper, maybe design a level whisper squeeeeeal :3

anyway i got to spend some of Bobs money, sorry i didn't finish all that pizza Bob but it was way to hot for that much buffalo chicken. i promise i'll bring a surprise on my last day

PS check out my blogs new art page. i'm using cooliris which i saw on Comlock's blog

Last Week Begins

so this is the last week of paradise. after this i have to go back and graduate highschool, go to work, go to uni, and hopefully come back and work here. maybe? i really don't know what i wanna be when i grow up and Digital Media offers a lot of options. guess i'll see what i can put up with for the longest amount of time and stick with that. but man is my attention span short

so new intern has a name, Tyler. hes pretty chill and reads this so i'll try not to say anything weird. hes a good animator (a lot better than i am) and hes got a neat style, if he can pull it off in Flash. we discussed music and how 2D animation is not a very lucrative career path anymore ever. its nice having yet another person to sit in silence with while everyone works and Tom whistles broken pieces of Oompa Loompa Doompa Dee Dee.

so i don't have any weird lunch stories cause i brought lunch today but i'm going back over to watch the FLYERS KICK THE CANADIENS ASSES! WOOO WE GOIN TO DA SHIP BABY! DRINK OUT DAT CUP! Tim set up the cable box to the projector so it'll be sweet.

in short, flipping buses is hard.

Exhausted from all this Whaling

yo so i'm really tired so this is gonna be short. game is coming along. gotta stop being so lazy and get this art done. blah blah blah

so another intern is coming in next week. we'll get to spend my last week together. i will have to challenge him to a duel. and by duel i mean street fighter. and maybe indian leg wrestling. should be good times.

so we went to this new place for lunch. terrible service cause it just opened but the waitress was bangin and so was the food. prior to the food Rob told us about some Whaling documentary. It sounded really gross. Scooping oil out of whale heads and stuff. Tearing blubber off with hooks. All good things for before food. I was sitting across from Jeff who was nursing some moutain dew-esque beverage from the 80s and everyone was like LOL 80s and i was like what? Tom ignored us for awhile playing Trucker's Delight which is based on the popular Trucker's Delight. Bob, Rob and I talked about how average Iron Man 2 was and about how Bob's Serbian inlaws enjoy american action films so much. Mostly about how Bob's Serbian Mother inlaw goes up and down stairs on all fours looking like the exorcist. Jeff stayed pretty quiet only chimed in on Iron Man 2s lack luster fight scenes. Mike gazed wistfully out the holes in the wall that should have been windows. There were Catholic school kids selling Alex's Lemonade. They were really loud. I mostly starred at the waitress praying to god someone would say something so we wouldn't all be there starring in different directions. This tension was alleviated by the arrival of food which lead to more silence as we gorged ourselves. This little town has some good stuff in it

my advice: lock the doors and burn the house down

so the programming elements of the game are all coming along nicely. after tomorrow there is only one more week D: that blows. i really don't wanna do anything else but this. at least i know i'm in the right direction for college. 3D rigging and stuff looks like a bitch though. but i digress. the game now allows for picking up new items to attack the buildings with and i even replaced the default weapon. thats right, bricks are valuable now. instead your default weapon will be the ever popular spray paint. the game will conclude with a mini game of Tip the Bus. its pretty exciting watching it come together. i still don't know if i could sit down cold and make a full on game now. i'm sure with some practice i'll get it.

so i'm looking around for music for it. this is what i've dug out of the Audio Portal and if anyone reads this please vote on them, you can comment even if you don't have an account. but check out these songs and artists:
e991e
Lenny C
Shadowfox2
DJ InTheDark

i'll prolly dig through more later but thats what i found first. i'm worried about the sounds being too much as buildings collapse and burn down. but Canabalt did it.

so i reinstate my hypothesis about Jeff. While i did get to see the basis for his cartoon Facebook Twitter as he went on a rant about how you need to cut ties with friends who aren't friends anymore while Bob told him that it is such a convenience to stay friends with this people on facebook so he doesn't have to go to New Jersey.
A valid argument. While Jeff continued to be a "ray of fucking sunshine" I still think he is like Aragorn, waiting to claim his castle and tap Steven Tyler's daughter dressed up like an elf. But with a probably less specific metaphor. For most of lunch we discussed Bob's inlaws moving in for a while from Siberia. Jeff offered the same advice he apparently offers about everything: cut your losses, lock the doors, burn the house down. His cheerfulness is contagious. Personally I couldn't stop looking at the hostess. Then the table next to us got cover in food with no one sitting there. I guess we missed some VIPs or something. In other news Mike is learning the piano YAY MIKE! pianos rock as do all keyboards and synths.

AWW Hump Day: blogs now have titles.

So i can't believe that i'm already half way through this. i'll prolly drop by the office uninvited all the time now though. but today was a lot of art but also some good design elements. the upgrades are pretty much decided and will be implemented tomorrow hopefully. the game will end with a button masher similar to wario ware or resident evil 4 where the player will attempt to tip a bus, the more followers the easier the tipping will be.

so we went to lunch (tom, luis, josh, rob and jeff [woo lunch with jeff!]) to willow grove mall for chik-fil-a and master wok. i'm always amazed how much i enjoy chik-fil-a. but i digress. lunch was weird as josh and tom talked about babies, then everybody reminisced about being kids and looking in magazines for new toys and stuff. they have a good point though, cause i grew up like that. but now kids are all about video games and there is so much media on it. do kids still get excited about action figures? do kids go to a store to see whats for sale or do they research? then we made fun of Rob for being a tea and chess nerd (he later explained to me why the Departed is a bad movie which i, being irish, refuse to accept) and thats when i realized something. Jeff Bandelin, of bandyhates.com fame, has really really pretty eyes. They are really round and a pale blue. The way he looked out from under his hat brim looked as if he were some lone wolf, weary of his life looking for a mate and quiet life in the country. Then we went back to the office and he started punching out all the black people and women as well as knocking the sheriff over again and again in Red Dead Redemption and i realized my hypothesis is probably wrong.

day 6

today was kind of slow. i spent about an hour trying to fix the pressure sensitivity on my tablet since i updated the driver and it stopped working. thanks wacom! i spent a lot of that time watching Tom play games. one was about getting out of rooms before they fill up with sand. he complained that the controls were floaty and slippery. its kinda weird working next to him. cause for one thing every couple of minutes i'm like HOLY SHIT TOM FULP <3333 and two because he plays stuff all day and the game he is working on has really weird sound effects. so its just weird noise, it doesn't bug me but its like stuff is exploding and ringing and zapping all the time. its kinda a dream come true really.

i didn't go to lunch cause its getting expensive. so i had a ginger ale outa that crazy vending machine (Mike is on the ginger ale button LOL). i listened to Tom and Bob discuss the t shirt issue. If you have been living under a rock and didn't see newgrounds is having a shirt sale to get rid of old stock before the new line up. the problem with shirts is that people usually buy them in waves, they are expensive, and its hard to sell things that Tom wants to sell. its a question of moving from selling NG related shirts to selling artists shirts. Its something no other community really does. but Tom wants to have sort of like a marketplace for artists to sell goods via NG. Bob suggested that it be something entirely separate. I can totally envision it but i can't see it being super successful in the face of so many shirt sites like threadless, busted tees, shirt fight, etc. I wanna help cause shirts are something i know (i sold a design to JINX and have submitted several to threadless as well as done large scale printing for school and my own functions.)

anyway the game is coming along slowly still. i really want there to be a lot of variety so the art is taking forever. i may have to dump some of the animation work on friends. Rutger? Arnar? but yeah. games.

End of Week 1

So Tom and Tim were up in New York at barcade so they got in late. this meant i got to chill in one of those big ass bean bag chairs and watch a couple episodes of SpongeBob with Stamper. we cracked jokes about people with glasses (Rob and Stampy) and how ridiculous it is for people with good vision (me and Josh) to make fun of impaired people. then we remembered Rob is a nerd and continued to make fun of that four-eyed weirdo chess player.

later when Tom came in he helped me wrap up a lot of things so now i have a sorta "first build" to the game. the player is still invincible but pretty much everything but power ups, some more variety, and less shitty visuals is there.

so yeah go check it out. feedback would be rad.
Philly Phlash Mob v1.0

then we ordered out for Indian food from Tiffin(which is pretty great) and kicked backed and watched Troll 2. its one of those so bad its good movies. if you search youtube for "worst acting ever" a scene from it comes up first. it was a great way to kill time although i don't know what happened to popcorn kid. i guess he got laid? or turned into vegetable goo? but yeah go watch that movie if you're looking for a good laugh.

can't believe the first week is over already. ffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
five days gone by and i still haven't talked to Jeff. wonder if any of them actually read this. if any of you guys do make him feel bad for not going out to lunch with us. unless he has a good reason, i'm trying to be a dick in the future in case there was something serious. i guess i'll end this convoluted post now

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Day 4

So the game now has a randomly scrolling building background of which one has shattering windows. the player can now run, jump and throw a brick. the parts of the mob now fall down when they hit obstacles. so one of the mechanics to work on will be to pick up new items to replace the brick. i need to think of what those will be. i also need to decide if it will be like Canabalt and just have the game keep going or go Miami Shark and just end when things get too ridiculous.

i prolly post what i have done so far tomorrow.

Stamper let me pick lunch today. i'm really bad at decision making so we went to Bagels and Burgers. unfortunately you cannot get burgers on bagels. it was fun just chillin with tom, bob, jose, stamper, and rob. jeff hasn't come to eat with us yet. or talk to me. or look at me. i guess i should make the first step but he is fairly intimidating. at lunch we talked about Tom's son possibly being trained by Russians to become a prodigy piano player. we decided hes too old, much like Anakin Skywalker getting judged by the Jedi council. we talked about movies and tv shows. Stamper called me out about watching True Blood since it was on my user page's favorites. after being kinda freaked that he even looked at my user page i decided that i didn't care cause its a good show. i really wish i could be friends with Rob. apparently we have a very different opinion of Battlestar Galatica. i think it can get kinda talky, especially in the last seasons but is balanced out by great action scenes. he is apparently ok with the drawn out drama and shaky cam zoom ins on Giaus Baltar's one face he always makes when someone blames serious shit on him.

in the car ride back i was told a funny story about a strip club. maybe i'll tell you when you're older.

i stayed late today and the guys were watching a Star Trek movie, i forget which one. it had the ridiculous plot of an energy ribbon that makes you think everything is perfect and this dude wants to blow up a star to let himself live in the energy. listening to Jeff describe it is really funny, it makes it seem like his cartoons are just what just comes out of his head. i'm sure he fine tunes it for cartoons but he is really funny on the spot.
i should have said something but its scary trying to be funny around people i think are so funny and creative.

Day 3

Mad short today. I had to go run in the PA Independent School State Champs. I ran 300 meter hurdles and 4 by 400 meter relay. it was drizzling and cold and miserable the whole time. i ran poorly but so did everyone else, by like 2-4 seconds. so its ok. but i'm pretty banged up so thats a drag.

so i've started adding buildings to destroy. so far its generic stores and stuff. i think i might see if i can throw in some Philly locations or i might decided to not explicitly destroy my hometown. but i think it would be neat to throw a brick at the liberty bell. i might put paddy's pub even though its not "real real" just for "play play"

also the objects that you throw will get more and more ridiculous. starting with bricks and molotovs and ending up with like throw the Philly Phanatic and sharks with lazer beams on their frickin heads? I need to think of more obstacles; any thoughts? so far i'm thinking police barricades, cop cars, Germantown cabs and maybe throw in a septa bus for challenge. those will be rare since it'll be so hard to save all you're people jumping over one.

i'm so tired.

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Day 2

another day passed and i've yet to challenge Jeff to Street Fighter. i know i'm going to lose but i feel i must. maybe we can play something i can win like Gears. but i digress.

today was fairly slow as i struggle to do art. i like to think i'm a functioning artist. i can paint and draw passably well but when it comes to using a tablet i just suck. maybe if i had one of those fancy cintiqs it would be easier but i'd also be missing that large part of wallet where money used to be. the game slowly but surely progresses although tomorrow i will barely be there as i have my State Track Champs to go to. I'm running the 300 meter hurdles. something else i'm sure to lose but qualified for anyway. this is where my father tells me that qualifying is great cause you've already beaten the majority. but thats a majority that doesn't have to drive out to Bumble Fuck in the rain and lose a race.

I wish i interacted with the staff more but i don't know if its cool to interrupt their work and stuff. oh well. i'm sure they'll be more chill xbox playing days ahead.

First Day

So let me begin by saying that biking to work sucks but biking back home is worse. Anyways so today was my first day at Newgrounds. I was greeted by a confused Rob but he was real chill about it. Tom Fulp continued to prove to be the nicest and chillest dude ever. So we discussed the game at hand and are starting to work out some details. small details such as the fact that i have zero programming background. its kind of like MTV's Made but quieter and with less commercials. but i digress. so the game i'm developing is called Phlash Mob. its based around the recent flash mobs in my lovely city of Philadelphia. the game will focus on the player controlling one person who slowly attracts a mob around him. you then proceed to riot and dodge obstacles and police.

So after some work, the ever wonderful Bob came in and told Tom it was lunch time. I was introduced to the remainder of staff i hadn't met (cept Josh). I'd go through and give my impressions of everyone but that might be rude. Basically every is really chill and fun. Jeff really is that good at Street Fighter and Stamper really acts like that all the time. Its really weird meeting a bunch of people and being like "i love your work" every time.

We went to the train station's cafe, where they know Tom and the boys by name. We had some wraps and burritos and soup and watched Bob do a crossword right next to the porn ads in the city paper. its a cool cafe even if its a bit of a wait for stuff. upon return we worked some more. Tom then let me check out some of the stuff coming down the pipeline soon. Gonna keep it a secret but its all very cool.
So here is the first bit of code I learned with some horrendous filler art. AS2 is pretty easy to get used to it seems, i'm just dumb. but learning if and else statements should be a second language at the end of these three weeks.
i'm not gonna post the game every day so i don't ruin the surprise.

http://www.swfcabin.com/open/1273523626

mouse to move and click to jump. the obstacles don't do anything yet but there is hit detection...

The Beginning

Hey my name is Steve Pettit. On the interweb I use the alias SPace. For as long as I can remember I have been a fan of Newgrounds.com. Even before I had internet I heard rumors as a child of a place to go to throw spears at Britney Spears and shoot at Pokemon. I have been a NG and flash addict ever since. Seriously, I know way too much about the culture (by culture I mean flame wars and 12 year olds arguing about video games). Now, in my senior year of high school, I am required to do a Senior Independent Project. As fate would have it I live a town over from Tom Fulp and his headquarters/secret base and he agree to let me intern/apprentice there. So for the next three weeks I will be writing about my time basically doing my dream job as well as using this as sort of a DevBlog about the flash game I will be making. So stay tuned, tell a friend and make sure you visit Newgrounds.
